Excerpt from Chapter 5: Recipes for the Digestive System
Ulcers: Drink cabbage juice 6 oz. a half hour before meals. If you don't have a juicer put 3 cups of chopped cabbage and 16 oz. water in the blender on chop then strain and drink. Cabbage contains vitamin U. Aloe Vera juice also is healing.

Vomiting: To stop nausea drink a tea made from peach leaves. CAUTION! Use only one leaf per cup! Red raspberry tea is also helpful.

Worms: Garlic capsules discourage all but the most hearty worms. Health food stores also have an antiparasite syrup that is very effective. It is compounded of fennel seed black walnut hulls senna leaves male fern tansey tame sage and wormwood. Another old Amish remedy is a tea made from pumpkin seeds (remove outer shell and toast the seeds).

Weight control: The general public thinks of the Amish as a very austere people. While it is true we strive for simplicity in many areas of life to our shame we are tempted much to sin at the table. Someone has said "Appetite is the last sin to be overcome."
The Amish are hearty workers and hearty eaters. The best cure for gluttony is do "push-ups " that is to push yourself up from the table! Temperance or self-control in eating and drinking is just as much a part of religion as any other virtue. It is necessary at times to go on a partial fast. We especially like the juice fast system. I lost 30 pounds and eliminated great amounts of toxins by drinking carrot juice 4 and 5 times daily for two weeks. Don't be alarmed if your skin starts to turn orange this is only a carotene tint and will go away.
