They sounded too good to be true, so we put these little "nuts" to the ultimate test: a local dairy farmer's grimy work clothes. Incredibly, soap nuts got them cleaner than anything else his wife tried. The dried fruit from the Asian Soapberry tree, soap nuts produce saponin, a biodegradable, hypoallergenic and extremely effective detergent that leaves clothes clean, fresh and soft. Nothing else is needed - not even fabric softener.

  • 12-oz bag does up to 120 loads
  • Less than 17¢ a load!
  • Also great for dishwashing and general cleaning (make liquid soap with the included recipe)
  • Virtually fragrance-free
  • Comes with 2 reusable fabric bags - just put soap nuts in the bag and toss the whole thing in the wash
  • For front load machines make a liquid soap from the nuts
  • Packaged in the USA

Note: Use 3 nuts per load, up to 3 times. Soap nuts work best in warm water, since warmth releases the saponin.

"Folks, I used this with the second wash of my son's cloth diapers...once dried they smelled like...NOTHING! That's what you want stinky diapers to smell like when they come out of the dryer! In fact, it even got rid of the fishy smell that the diaper cream leaves on the liners and soaks through. I plan to use this on his regular clothes washes too since he has sensitive skin."

"I love soap nuts, though I don't agree they are virtually odorless. My clothes smell really good, sort or like plums. Absolutely love soap nuts. <3 "

"I use a wringer washer. I use Fels Naptha, washing soda and borax. I purchased the nuts to boost the cleaning power for my husband's really filthy clothes. I plan to use the nuts for the clothes he wears when he cleans the barn or works on the tractor. I have never used the nuts alone, but I can tell you that in combination with the Fels Naptha mix that it got my husbands greasy clothes very clean. The Fels Naptha mix was not enough. I put one soap nut in per load and let it agitate with the greasy clothes for about 20 minutes. I left the clothes overnight then agitated the washer again for 30 minutes. My cold water is about 40 degrees in the winter and 55 degrees in the summer. The clothes did not have a perfume smell but they smelled clean to me. If you want to smell like flowers, this is not the product for you."

"I'm a desk jockey, so it's a little hard to tell how effective these are on my clothes, but my husband, who works construction, says they have been working well for his dirty clothes. I love the very light, clean scent, and I especially love that the water from the washer can be used in the garden."

"This works really well, but I'm always losing those little bags and finding them later after I fold clothes. Each bag of soap nuts comes with two but I suggest buying extra."

"Love the soapnuts! I tried them because of developing allergies and the itching was driving me crazy. Since using the soapnuts I stopped itching, my clothes are clean and smell like cotton instead of fragrance and saving money too! It's a winner for my family!"

"Purchased the Soap Nuts for Ayurvedic Hair Shampoo recipe. I haven't tried using them in my laundry, but they do a great job in cleaning my hair. Recommend that you do your research first for Ayurvedic pre-conditioning practices because the soap nuts by themselves will dry your hair out. Otherwise, I love them; they do a great job."

"I LOVE these soap nuts. I was skeptical at first, but when I saw the rinse water with suds and how it really cleaned, I was hooked. I used four nuts in the bag for four loads of laundry, and it was fine. I washed towels first, and they were clean and soft. No more lugging around laundry detergent and fabric softener jugs! This is a great, feel-good product! Thanks!!"

"As a large farm family, we do loads and loads of DIRTY laundry. We LOVE the soap nuts. They do an excellent job of cleaning the clothing, a clean smell with no chemicals. They are terrific! You should try them for yourself."

"I simply love using the Laundry Soap Nuts! With lots of boys at home I knew they would put this item to the test. Their clothes came out clean and look great. I don't believe I will buy traditional laundry soap ever again...."

"Very impressed after first use! Got my 4-year-old's t-shirt, covered with spaghetti sauce and unwashed for several days, COMPLETELY CLEAN. And, no strong detergent smell. I'm raving about these little nuts now!"

"So far so good, I've only used them a few times but they seem to do a great job and I love that they are natural. I've been using detergents and fabric softeners that are "free" of allergy causing agents, but I wasn't completely convinced. I found information that recommends using washing soda for extra cleaning power for really dirty or greasy clothes & since there are no whiteners in the soap nuts, they recommend oxyclean if the whites look dull."

"I have been using soap nuts for several months with great results. They work better than anything else I have tried on my husband's very dirty barn clothes. I have a high efficiency washer so I only use one or two soap nuts in the bag when using warm or hot water. If washing clothes in cold water I make the liquid as recommended on the package. To finish off the load of laundry I use a cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle instead of fabric softener."

"I was skeptical, but I bought them out of curiosity. Boy, do these work great! My husband's dirty jeans came out cleaner than when I used the commercial products. The only thing I would advise is this: If you are used to a "fabric softener" smell, add a little fabric softener. You don't need the fabric softener because the clothes come out of the dryer nice and fluffy with no static cling! I am a definite "convert" and will continue to use them."

"I bought these for my son who would be a survivalist in my opinion. He loved them! The clothes came out clean, no residue and no chemical smells like your commercial products! I would recommend these to any one. Just follow the directions and you will have great results."

"I bought these because my daughter has terrible eczema and I was hoping to alleviate her problem. I am very impressed with their ability to clean. Even the dirty socks from the girls working at the barn were completely clean with no soapy residue! I have seen only a mild difference with her eczema though, but it has only been 2 weeks and not everything has gone through with the soapnuts yet. I plan to continue using them."

"First off Ive got to say I LOVE Lehmans!!! When I saw these soap it nuts in the catalog it all sounded too interesting so I had to give them a try. The day they came in my husband had been under the house to repair some plumbing lines and he came back in the house covered with that Oklahoma red dirt that never comes out of clothes. So the nuts got put to the test. Put a few of the nuts in the bag, dropped them into my non electric washer (also from Lehmans) and UNBELIEVABLE..the clothes came out so clean. There was NO Oklahoma red dirt, nothing but clean. I was amazed and I WILL BE BUYING MORE of these nuts. THANK YOU LEHMANS.."

"I have recently tried these Soap Nuts. They do a good job. It's odd to see a SUDSLESS wash...but it does seem to clean the clothes without leaving any scent or residue. They are not miracle workers...you still have to prespot grease and heavy stains just like you do with any traditional detergent. But they are inexpensive, natural and seem to work well!"

"Love the idea but not sold on having to find the bag in the wash. I also don't like having to find the bag before rinse cycle. Probably won't get again. But they do work."

"I like the soapnuts, however in our area were we have extremely hard water I'm only getting two or three loads using four nuts. Have thought about makeing the liquid detergent with them, but traditionally liquid detergents don't work well in hard water. Also, have found that using a little washing or baking soda helps."

"I love the idea of these nuts, but they are a bit more difficult to use with a front-loading washer due to the fact that they must be boiled to make a liquid form. If I had known this, I would not have bought extra bags but otherwise they are great."

"The soap nuts work very well! Very convenient, no mess. My wife puts them in the washer before the clothes while it's filling and adds soda for whitening. Seems to work better than putting the clothes in first. It also dissolve the soda better."

"I really like Lehman's so I hate to leave anything but a 5 star rating, but I wasn't very pleased with the soap nuts. I used them as recommended (4 nuts per load, only using those nuts for 3 loads) and my clothes came out looking okay, but smelling dirty. They still smelled like sweat, etc. and seemed only rinsed. This was also with 1/2 cup baking soda added to each load as well. I ended up rewashing everything using a detergent. "

"Removed odor but not even basic dirt. Bit disappointing, but was worth a try. Maybe the liquid soap recipe that came with it will work better?"

"I was disapointed with the soap nuts. My clothes came out dull and still smelling dirty. I really like the idea of natural soap, but they just didn't work for me. I still love the Lehman's catalog, though,(it is our family's "wishbook") and they're customer service is great!"
