BAKER'S CHOICE WOOD COOKSTOVES DESCRIPTION
Amish Made Cookstoves
Amish tinkerer and machinist Mark Stoll is never satisfied with things the way they are. A lifetime of wood burning experience led him to view old-fashioned cookstoves, with their tiny fireboxes as impractical dinosaurs. Mr. Stoll re-engineered his ranges from the ground up. His Pioneer Maid stove was the first North American cookstove to take advantage of the improved performance that controlled combustion design brings. Today, many other wood cookstoves feature controlled combustion, but Stoll's unconventional ranges are still an exceptional investment.
  • Controlled Combustion - Precise control of firebox temperatures and extended, overnight burns. Big, fist-sized knobs stay cool to the touch. Easy Loading-Large fireboxes are a Pioneer hallmark. The Maid's is the largest in our catalog. The Baker's Choice is the largest in its price class. Either stove easily handles irregularly shaped or unsplit wood. Easily heats small or average-sized homes.
  • Durable, Simplified Design - Traditional cookstoves are screwed together from sheet metal panels. Pioneer cookstoves are reinforced with welded steel. Many parts (50% of the Maid's body by weight) are stainless steel. One-piece steel (not stainless) top with two lids for access, firebrick-lined firebox, unique dump grate system.
  • Amish Farmer Practicality-If you want nostalgic design, world class appearance or a nice finish, this is not your stove. Pioneer ranges are built for function, not form. They are assembled in a farmer's backyard, after all. Like most things on a farm, how it works means much more than how it looks. Customers who buy this stove are usually happy with its performance but often complain about nonaligned seams and rough finishes that may show weld spatter. (For example, the air controls work well but wobble when you turn them.) Tested to UL standards, two-year warranty.

Note: Unlike most stoves, even though they are tested to UL standards, they need floor protection ¾" thick that extends to the front and sides an additional 18"

"This stove is awesome. We replaced an older home comfort that had to be fed hourly. We feed the bakers choice about three times a day. We learned how to use it to heat the whole house. just open the oven door and stoke it up. It will heat the whole house. When the directions said not to let it get cherry red I was concerned. However, opening the oven door will prevent that from occurring. With the home comfort I had to use paper to get it to draw the smoke up the chimney. I've never had to do that with the bakers choice. I checked the chimney the other day and no creosote buildup. "

"This affordable stove is the perfect practical addition to our family environment. It is made to last for the long haul while providing heat for cooking as well as during the cold winter months. I am even more impressed with my new found resource, the Lehman staff. They talked us through every step of this purchase. They were quick to get back to us to address every question/concern we had. The answers were clear and precise even though we had no experience with this kind of purchase. Thank you"

"We purchased this cook stove 10 years ago as we moved toward a more self-sustaining lifestyle. It is the best investment we ever made. The stove is durable and cooks and bakes with minimal effort. The stove box is large enough to accommodate enough wood to also use in heating the house. If you want a reliable stove, this is it."

"We bought a Baker's Choice earlier this winter, and are very happy with it so far. It heats our house very well, better than the wood stove we had before. I love cooking on it too! I haven't used my electric stove since buying this. If you plan to bake a lot, you may find the oven a little narrow, I can't fit my cookie sheets or large roaster into the oven because of the width. Breads, pies, casseroles, etc can be baked in the oven easily. The water reservoir is very handy, and heats the water to steaming hot. Overall a great stove for the money!"

"I would like to comment on the Bakers choice wood stove. I have owned one since 1997. I could not be happier with it. It is front and center in my combined living, dinning and kitchen area. It gets many positive comments from visitors, but I enjoy it every day. The oven is a great size for cooking everything from Turkey to pizza. The fire box is large and once coals are build up it will hold heat well. It is easy to clean, it draws very well. It is easy to stop the cold inversion so there is no smoking the house. My husband told me I could order any stove I wanted. I looked and read about all your other wood cook stoves and this one suited my needs the best, plus it just happened to be the cheapest. The best value for the buck I have every spent. Thank you"

"We just purchased and used our Bakers Choice stove for the last part of our winter here in Missouri. It adequately heated the whole house and used amazingly less wood than expected. We will soon be moving to the mountains of Idaho and will be happy to take this stove cross country with us."

"About five years ago I installed a Bakers Choice in the lower level of my two story house, for emergency back-up heat. The upper level has been heated with wood stove since 1974. In December, 2008 we had an ice storm that took out power for five days. It is cold in New Hampshire in December! It was my first real use of the Bakers Choice, and I had a supply of coal, as well as wood. The stove performed wonderfully, and when loaded with coal, will hold a fire over night. The combination of wood/coal capability is a real plus."

"We have used our stove for almost 10 years now and love it. We only use it during the winter for heating and cooking and find it more than adequate for both. It is both functional and efficient. While not as decorative as some of the others, I prefer the simple, clean lines and ease of cleaning. I would buy this one again and recommend it without reservation."
