Learn to care for your fruit trees and berry bushes as part of the larger ecosystem. This richly illustrated guide explores the connection between home orcharding and permaculture; the importance of native pollinators; understory planting and beneficial insectary plants; and safe pest and disease solutions. One reviewer said, “No other author covers the subject so completely, understands it so well, and still manages to make it accessible.” A fantastic addition to any orcharder’s library and a recipient of the American Horticultural Society’s 2012 Book Award.

The Orchard Ecosystem
Forest-edge ecology defines where fruit trees want to grow. Berries by their woodsy nature want the very same ecosystem advantages. So we begin here, with the perspective of the plant, not the human.
Orchardists have the choice to honor tree wisdom or not. The means required to produce a reasonable fruit crop will be determined on the basis of this decision: Are numerous spray medicines going to be required to make up for not honoring how Nature works? Tree health is integrally tied to soil health, which in turn flourishes with the health and diversity of biological organisms in the soil. These dynamics lie at the core of an orchard ecosystem, whether we are talking about a multi-acre commercial orchard or the trees and berries you've chosen to grow in your yard. Next we enter the fascinating realm of biodiversity that makes up the potentially seen portion of the place we call home: the flowers and herbs nearby, the bees and butterflies, flavored root ground, all sorts of beneficial fungi, an even my friends the chickadees. All are players in the growing of fruit. All very much hope you will choose biological priorities over expedience.
