EUROPEAN-STYLE FERMENTING CROCKS - 20-LITER DESCRIPTION
When the gutter around the rim is filled with water and the heavy lid placed on top, an air-tight seal forms to protect food from air and decay. (The gutter must be occasionally refilled as water evaporates.) These crocks can be kept in a cool place for months, letting the vegetables inside ferment naturally.
  • Designed for making sizable batches of sauerkraut or preserving food for a large family or emergencies.
  • Lead-free, food-safe glaze will not retain foods' flavors and makes cleanup easy
  • Two semicircular weight stones rest on top of food and create pressure needed for proper fermentation
  • Also make excellent containers for kindling, feed, seed, plants or decorations

Note: Weight stones vary in color. Because German-made crocks are handmade, measurements may slightly vary. Also, there are often imperfections in the finish where the lighter tan of the ceramic shows through the dark brown glaze. These imperfections do not affect the performance.

SPECIAL NOTES
* NOTE: An additional $25 shipping surcharge is required.

"I researched the large fermenting crocks before buying the Schmitt crock from Lehman's. Cheapest price and customer service was the selling factor. My crock arrived fast in perfect condition. I filled it with 26 pounds of shredded cabbage and used Caldwell's Culture Starter (also from Lehman's) and for my first batch of Kraut in this crock, I NO LONGER have mold, slime or even (once) maggots in my sauerkraut! It turned out PERFECT! Took samples to the farmer's market to the other vendors and those who were thinking of purchasing a fermenting crock, are now sold on one as well! You just cannot go wrong!"

"Used the 20 liter crock for two years. Made between 40 to 45 lbs each year. Did a fantastic job. Well built and should last a lifetime."
