The coffee grinder arrived on time and the grinder, itself, was in good condition. The only problem was finding a crimp in the lid meant to be keep the freshly ground fresh. Calling Lehman's about this, I got a very pleasant response and a promise to send me a new lid. That's the way Lehman's always treats me!

We have the closed-top model, purchased about 15 years ago. Still using the same jar bottom, too. Can't praise this grinder enough. Takes about 100 turns on the handle to prep enough beans for my 10 oz coffee press every morning. Coffee is the very best freshly ground. Get One Now!!!

I received this in mail on Thursday-took it out of package-no instructions on how to assemble or adjust the grinder. Not that adjusting was an issue-I took the bolt off the top so I could put the handle on and the bolt fell in to the grinder, and it is IMPOSSIBLE to get it out. Therefore, this grinder can NEVER work. I called the number on my receipt, which was what I was supposed to do BEFORE mailing it back for a refund. I spoke with Amanda, who told me she needed to talk to a supervisor about it and would telephone me or email me back on Saturday, with instructions on whether or not I needed to return this JUNK in order to get a refund....it is now Sunday, and Amanda did not get back with me. So, for now I am unhappy about the shoddy product AND the poor customer service.

This is OK if you are strong, but the small size and therefore short arm don't give enough mechanical advantage for me. The reviewer tip on setting it on a wet cloth was helpful - I used a silicone hot pad. I found it easier to use one of those gardening gloves that has a non-slip coating on my left hand to steady the unit while I cranked with my right. The glove stripped the finish off the rim of the grinder though. I only used a few beans at a time too. I had to use the back and forth method for whole beans, rather than the continuous circular motion. The grinder worked great at grinding pre-ground coffee that was ground for perk and grinding it to fine drip grind, here I could grind continuously, but grinding whole beans is a trial for me.

I received this coffee grinder recently and am very pleased with it! It's simplicity itself, with a mason jar (easy to clean!) attached to a hand grinder which really requires minimal effort. The exact coarseness of the grind is easily achieved by turning the sprocket up or down. This is truly an ingenious gadget--and is going at a much more reasonable price than other, fancier grinders out there. I even checked out used and vintage manual grinders. This hopper was cheaper and minus the quirks or possible damages. I'm very happy with this purchase!!

I love this coffee grinder for it's charm, uniformly fine grind, and the fact that I don't have to worry about grinding my coffee if the power ever goes out! But no matter how hard I try, I can't pull the locking washing up against the spring far enough to turn the threaded wheel to make a courser grind. And I need a courser grind to use my Vietnamese phin. Also, I spill beans everywhere trying to load the hopper. The door is too small. Mine does have a sliding door, but I found that it isn't necessary and tends to get stuck in the open position and takes a lot of force to close it. So over all, it's charming, but not at all practical.

We have an open hopper model, which I was skeptical of, but it works just fine, I can grind some coffee quickly without too much hassle. It's taken a little adjustment doing it by hand, but totally worth the effort!

I LIKE it!!! It grinds much better than my electric coffee bean (chopper). It has a much more consistent size grind than an electric whirl blade chopper. The coffee also does not stick to the side of the jar like an electric chopper. It takes just a little longer but is worth the effort.

Love love this grinder. While my electric grinder does a wonderful job, its of no value if the power goes out and it is extremely noisy! I purchased this grinder to take on camping trips, but I may just keep it at home and give the electric one to good will. It is quiet, cost effective and a labor of love to use. The canning jar does hold enough for 3 pots of coffee, and the hopper alone will hold enough to grind enough coffee for a 12 cup pot of coffee. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the pleasures of extremely fresh coffee. Others have said that the jar is somewhat awkward to hold and grind and that is true. That being the only draw-back, what a pleasure to add to my kitchen.

I bought the Open Hopper with Ceramic Burr version. Works great, easy to adjust. Love it.

I have now had this for a few days and I have ground about 1 lbs of coffee to espresso grind. Works very well and I love it so far.

The rating goes for the manufacturer's phone support, too. T grind was set too fine and I couldn't manage to follow the (very clear) directions for adjusting it. My fingers weren't strong enough. I called the number on the product with my problem. The rep was able to tell me exactly what to do to make adjustment easier, and assured me he would send a replacement spring if I messed it up! I didn't need the new spring, the grind is now perfect, and I love the grinder. This is the closed-top grinder with the cast iron burr. Don't know how the ceramic one is. Thanks, Marty Cromme

This will in no way replace the CONVENIENCE of an electric grinder, but what it lacks in convenience it more than makes up for in charm, quality, and results. If you're someone who needs to make constant adjustments to the coarseness of the grind, you might get a bit frustrated since it's hard to be precise in setting a level until you've already started to grind the beans. The opening in the top is a bit small, but -- with a little practice -- you can dump the beans right in.

The opening for the beans is much too small. It should be large enough to put the beans in with a coffee scoop, but you really need a funnel. Also, the grind adjustment is very difficult to work -- you need to press down the spring with one finger and turn the adjustment with the rest of your fingers. They should substitute the mason jar for the cheap wood box on the larger, better grinder. That would be ideal.

I use this every morning to grind my jumbo cup of coffee. It works good, looks nice, and gives me a little morning wake up workout. I'm glad I got this one instead of the other types. It's the best and makes the best coffee for miles around.

Our electric grinder broke; ordered parts & this hand grinder for emergencys. The hand grinder is much nicer than I thought it would be. Makes perfect grounds, takes a little effort but well worth it.

The coffee grinder is a beautiful piece. It is easy to turn and the coffee is very rich tasting.

My wife and I have been using this grinder for about a month now. It works very well. It is quite attractive on the counter, and best of all it is nearly silent when grinding coffee (except for the creaking of my old bones..) It's easy to adjust the grind and the locking nut keeps the setting where you put it. At last, we can grind FRESH coffee for brewing any time of day without waking the entire household. It even came with a little jar that holds enough grinds for a couple of large pots. (or one REALLY STRONG cup of Joe!)

SUCH a beautiful coffee grinder! every part of this coffee grinder is not only functional (grinds really well!) but absolutely gorgeous. I haven't purchased mine yet, but it is definitely on my list of 'must haves!'
