I want to say a word about Lehman's. One often hears that a company believes in tradition and simple times. I mostly take it with a grain of salt, but in November while visiting PA from Ottawa Canada I asked my spouse to take me to Lehmans. Believe me it's a drive from Ottawa. I bought this lamp and when I got home and filled it there was a manufacturing defect and I ended up with lamp oil all over my kitchen floor. I wrote to ask if anything could be done to help me. I thought perhaps some discount on shipping or some such. They sent me a new one at no cost! It's more than good customer service, its commitment to others, and I thank you

Sorry but not very impressed with this lamp. The base was cracked out of the box just slightly, but enough to leak Kerosene drop by drop all over the place, got that glued shut. The wick is cheap, once adjusted it burns down within 10 minutes so your constantly adjusting the flame. After awhile the wick carbons over and needs trimming. Not a good idea for a practical lamp, but only good for a decoration. Not Happy with this purchase !

Reflector wouldn't sit right to get it over the top of the chimney had to modify it

These are very well made, very nice looking lamps. The only thing I would change is maybe holding more oil but it is sufficient to burn for quite awhile. The frame around the lamp itself is pretty heavy duty, much more so than I expected. The hood fits nicely over the lamp and as always the shipment was very well packed. You cannot go wrong with this lamp for either power outages or for your off the grid home. I love mine.

I received my lamp very quickly and in excellent shape. The design is nice, a little dainty but nice. I had read all the previous reviews and anticipated that I might have to modify the burner as described in some of the previous reviews. I tried it without modification and with modification and the result as still not acceptable. I did not like the way the wick was burning and also the inability to increase the amount of burn/light without simply burning wick...so I looked further at the design. I suspect the added round holes in the burner are to allow added air to enter the glass chimney to allow for some cooling and anti-sooting effect. Then I noted the wick was smaller than the other lamp on my table, and I then took out the yard-stick. The normal lamp on my table uses a 7/8th wick and the wick tube on that lamp is 7/8th inches wide. The Hanging Lamp uses a (supplied) 3/4 inch wick and the WICK TUBE (on the one I received) is 7/8th inches wide! I installed a new 7/8th inch cotton wick and the lamp burns correctly, with no further modifications! It also burns as bright as any normal kerosene table lamp. I listed the Lehman's 7/8th inch replacement wick number below. You may want to order the packet of wicks when you order the lamp, as I suspect more than just mine were designed for a wider 7/8 inch wick rather than the supplied 3/4 inch wick. 7/8 Flat Wick, (Lehman's Item #3078755)

Bought this for some additional light in our camp. Works great. I spray painted the under side of the reflector a chrome color which increases the light below the lamp. Some reviewers complained about the flame flicker. I noted that and attempted to regulate the air entering the burner as others tried but found the fuel wouldn't burn completely giving off a noxious odor. With KLEEN lamp fuel and an unobstructed air flow, the flame does flicker but not enough to bother us. We sometimes use it for a nite lite and find it burns very well and long turned down low. it is a pain to light but I still like it.

I bought this lamp in Sept. '13, I love the looks of it hanging in my dining room and it provides enough light when needed: However I have to agree lighting it isn't an easy task; 1. have to take it down, 2. lift the (light) reflector hood off the chimney and 3. carefully lift chimney up off the base (if not careful in doing this, chimney will hit the smoke bell and crack or break). Had this design been more like that of the Dietz lanterns where the chimney could be lifted to light it, it would be so much better. I still love this lamp! But the ease of lighting it isn't all that easy but yet nothing I can't deal with now that I know to take care in lifting the chimney.

I purchased one of these last year for use in an open air museum (Nevada City) located in South West Montana. We use it just about 2-3 nights per week and love it. My family and I are part of the life ways program and actually stay in one of the cabins inside the museum, and our oil lamps are our lights. I would suggest this lamp to anyone looking for a hanging oil lamp.

We are long time users of kerosene lamps. First I painted the reflector with chrome paint which definitely helped the output, lights easily, have noticed some flame flicker but the modification one reviewer mentioned seemed to helped. It certainly provides enough light to adequately a 10x10 room in our camp and can be used to read by. Nice product for the price.

This was delivered and before I had a chance to unpack it, we lost power. Took it out of packing, filled it with oil, trimmed the wick and we were good to go! Lite our kitchen perfectly and every now and then I just light it for fun. Loved the light it gives out and how it looks! Love this lamp!

Just got two. The lamp looks good but there has evidently been zero design work, or testing of the finished product. It is basically unusable out of the box. The burner is some strange design I have never seen before that was evidently never tested after it was designed. The air hole modification is a basic requirement with this item to make it usable. The unwanted air holes cause extreme flame instability. Spray painting the bottom of the reflector with a few coats of ultra white paint definitely increases the light that it projects down on things below. With those two mods the lamp is a whole new animal. If they would have used a proven queen anne burner design then it would have been a lot better product. Converting it to a #0 queen anne would have been a possibility if it used a standard thread seize, but it doesnﾒt.

This is a nice oil lamp for the price. Mine arrived in perfect condition, and I haven't had the problem with sputtering that some of the other reviewers mentioned. It's not a whole lot brighter than a candle, so you'll want want additional oil lamps or other light sources if you plan to use this for emergency lighting. I didn't find it bright enough to read by. It's a nice lamp for the price, though, and I like the old-fashioned look of it.

We purchased two of these a few yrs ago for our very small kitchen and hung both over our very small table., and though they look good they are near worthless. They have a dark reflector and that makes no sense. we lined ours with foil with only minor improvements. We attempted to modify the air flow similarly as stated above .since we were off grid at the time we were seriously disappointed. We have a wrap around deck on our home so plan to hang them out there . will probably get two more if only for decoration. I'd say that if you had a teeny tiny room or area you wanted to light it might be 'ok' but not great. maybe as a wash room night light . I don't know. grand disappointment since we don't require much light to begin with in the evenings ..

Bought one of these months ago to use in our 'Off Grid' cabin. Works well, well made, etc. My only complaint is it's a pain to light. You have to completely lift the light reflector above the chimney and remove the chimney to light the lamp. That, or have two people. ;-)

I love this lamp. I just received it today. I hung it over my sewing area, so I can now sew any time I want. It lights up the area very well. It was an excelllent value, and looks very nice with my treadle sewing machine. Nicole in CA.

Not my favorite of our collection because the little look at the top gets too warm to pick up when it's time to blow it out. It is very sturdy for the price. We use it when the power goes out instead of nightly.

I bought two of these within the past year. Was a little disappointed that they do not throw out as much light as my kerosene lanterns that they replaced in the kitchen. Perhaps if the underside of the shade was painted white? Like other observations here, one of my lamps flickers quite alot. They are more difficult to light than my lanterns, but much easier to extinguish. I expected more, but I like them. I have found that if you use clear lamp oil, you get a little spot light right under the lamp if you need to see something under more light than is in the room. I am totally off grid, so these lamps are my kitchen lights.

I purchased this to hang above my sink in the kitchen. I keep the light down low in the evenings and it's just the right light to fix a cup of coffee by. Turn it up 'til it smokes and back it off, and it's plenty of light to do dishes in the event of a power outage. Initially I had the flickering light problem, but after following another commenter's solution it's got a nice steady flame. Here's his suggestion: Remove the top cone of the burner and with aluminum foil tape(the type used for ducting)close off the round air holes around the inside of the cone . The burner gets plenty of air from the lower slotted holes. I used plain ol' aluminum foil folded over instead and it worked perfectly.

While we lived off-grid in TN, we used three of these lamps for 5 years. They look great, are easy to handle, and and are built to last. We're back on the grid but I'm buying another couple for those nights when the elctric lights just seem too...electric, if you know what I mean!

This light gives pretty good light. Use this light in my shed a lot. Note though use high grade lamp oil though. Can not use lower grades of oil or will smoke you out. Be very careful when removing the chimney. The burner easily comes off the glass base. I have two of these and use all the time. Would have given 5 lanterns instead of 4 if the burner stayed on better. All and all a great product.

it's very pretty in person, and it casts an ambient warm light, but it's a pain to light it with the reflector shade on it, and it's a little lamp with a little burner that produces a small amount of light. This is not task or reading lighting at all. it flickers like a candle as well. it really left me disappointed and unimpressed. it is priced accurately, if you want a night light or something cute buy it, if you need light to cook by, wash dishes or read, look elsewhere.

Looks very good from a few feet away. Doesn't work. Really unusable with kerosene. This lamp has the most erratic flame I've ever seen on a kerosene lamp, very poor fuel combustion. I tried controlling the intake air and combustion did not improve. I'm going to leave it hanging between the kitchen and breakfast room until I can replace it with one of Lehman's beautiful French hanging lamps.
Dec 11, 2011
I used the metal tape idea described by another reviewer and found that it did improve the steadiness of the flame. It looks very nice hanging over my kitchen table. It's brightness was a little less than I had hoped for but it will work fine for power outages or romantic dinners! It was packed very carefully and arrived in perfect condition as usual.

This is exactly what we were looking for for reading in our remote cabin. I'm hoping one above the chairs and one above the propane stove will allow us good, bright, quiet light. That it is visually pleasing, sturdily built, and was on sale when I bought it are all bonuses.

I recently purchased this lamp, and I must say it performs excellently and I love it! It is not as bright as some, but sheds enough light to work or dine by, and it is a welcome addition to my household collection. I live in a rural area where we frequently get power outages during winter months, and I anticipate this little lantern coming in quite handy.
Nov 29, 2011
These lights are very nice looking. We bought them for emergencies but have been using them in the evenings with no problems.
Nov 29, 2011
this little lamp is great! it does fliker a bit. but, i read the other reviewer's advice on how to fix that problem. my husband and i raised our 3 (now grown) children off the grid in the north Idaho mountains. we could of used a lamp or 2 like this at the time. this lamp is no Aladdin but, it is over a 100 dollars cheaper. we have paid more money for alot less lamp from other retailers. it is our opinion you can't go wrong with this lamp. we did buy 2 of them. we are going back to living off the grid in the spring and are going to need them. thank you lehman's for all your products you offer for people who chose to live our type of life stile.

AWESOME!! I now have four of these beauties..I LOVE them!! They are great in lighting our house when the Oklahoma storms and tornadoes (and now earthquakes) knock our power out. I give them a 5 STAR rating and I will be ordering more. THANKS Lehmans!!

Received shipment very quickly. It was a week or so before we could go to camp to try it. The lamp works well for the price we paid. Not quite as much light as we had hoped and the adjustment of the wick is questionable, seems like the wick is fairly high out of the burner and may not last long.Overall it is ok for the price.

Received the lamp today in excellent condition, well packed by Will B. Good-looking oil lamp. Thanks much, Gene B. Tucson, AZ

Nice size lamp, seems solid. But, it throws a very dull light. I thought the metal reflector would work better than it does. Seems brighter without it. Looks good, but not really effective. Disappointed.
Nov 18, 2011
I bought this lamp during a sale, and wish I had bought more! We hung this lamp in the corner of our living room, and it works wonderfully! It lit the entire room quite nicely all on it's own! As some other reviews had mentioned, there may be a little flickering sometime - however, we did not find it enough to be bothersome. We'll certainly be buying more!

A lot of lamp for the money but poorly designed. As others have noted, the lamp as delivered does not have a steady flame, particularly in the slightest breeze. Does not seem as well made as the (much) more expensive alternatives. Of the two I received, one has parts that fit well together and flickers just a bit. The other is so eratic that it is distracting and unusable. I'll try modifying the burner as others have suggested, but as received this lamp is a poor illuminator.
Oct 13, 2011
I concur with the one-lamp review noted here: barely passable as an oil lamp. The light is inadquate. The quality is inadequate. The lamp is nothing but cheap junk made in China. This is not the high-quality merchandise I expect from Lehman's.

Love this! I bought one for my dining room in case we get another Hurrricane Katrina. It's functional and attractive, so I'm going to get another to go with it.

I purchased one of these lamps on a trip to Lehmans last year. I use the lamp in my tent at civil war reenactments and love it. I am returning to Lehmans in May and have 6 more to buy for others in my reenacting unit. Great lamp at a great price

I ordered two of these lamps recently. And I will get several more. I am living off-grid. I thought they would be nice over the wood cook stove... They are... but someone dropped off 6 baby Muscovy ducks. I put them in their cage by the fireplace for warmth. One light went immediately to the top of their cage so they could see to eat and bathe. The lamp puts out a wonderful soft light and you can see the fluffed ducks sleeping quietly below in their clean straw. This is not the brightest lamp I have... but it is one of the most used for diverse project, including quiet dinners for humans.

Very pleased with the item. Purchased one to see if I liked it. Will order a couple more in future.

I purchased two of these lamps for use up at my cabin (8650'ASL). We are off the grid totally. They provide good indoor light; they hang up on the ridge log and burn efficiently. They reflect well and I would purchase more. I turn up the flame till it smokes then back off till it quits and there's plenty of light.
Jun 26, 2010
Purchased two of these. They had a flickering, inconsistant flame. I figured out why, too much air. Remove the top cone of the burner and with aluminum foil tape(the type used for ducting)close off the round air holes around the inside of the cone . The burner gets plenty of air from the lower slotted holes. After doing this the lamps work very well. This easy modification made the lamps very enjoyable.

I now have two of these Lamps and plan on buying at least 4 more. They put out great lighting and the reflector helps to really light up. These have been great in all our Oklahoma outages, THANKS AGAIN LEHMANS!!!!!

This is a great lampI used ultra pure oil, no smoke Great !workman ship is very good quality for all around us. order was packed good no breakage

Barely passable as an oil lamp. the slightest wind causes the lamp to flicker wildly. Very feeble light. Save your money for a better oil lamp. I am not satisfied with the two I bought..However, the price is cheap so I guess you get what you pay for..Thank you

I have this lamp hanging above my oak & wrought iron cafe style table. It is one of my favorite places to sit in the evening. The ambiance of the lamp makes for a very relaxing place to unwind and enjoy a cup of coffee. It's an inexpensive light source for when the electricity is out as well. I love it's rustic charm.
Aug 24, 2009
Great quality for the price. It does tend to flicker a bit because of the burner design, but overall it is a great lamp.
