Don't Buy the Ice Cream Spade
Jan 2, 2021
I bought 2 of these, based on a review I had seen in a blog. I wish I could share a picture. Both of them are going in the garbage today. The "finish" on the handle has worn off to the point it is bare wood. There are rust pits on each of the blades. I handwash and immediately dry them after use, so it cannot be blamed on the dishwasher.
Lehman's says: With proper washing, the finish should not have come off the handle and the blades should not have rusted. Please reach out to us so we can make it right!

I ordered 4 of these spades, 3 for my children and 1 for me. After using it for a couple of weeks and only hand washing, the stain finish is already flaking off. When I just looked at other reviews, I see I am not the only one disappointed. It just goes to confirm Made in China poor quality. I am also disappointed that I can only return 3 unopened spades, but because I used one for a couple of weeks and found it defective, I cannot be refunded for that one.

After a few uses and careful hand washing, the finish on the handle is coming off and the end is rusting. I even noticed some of the finish had come off into a bowl of ice cream. It works in theory, but needs to be better crafted.

Some of the reviews about quality and potential rusting are not issues that I have experienced yet. Maybe time will tell, but for now....I love this thing! My family/grands love to make hand churned ice cream and this is perfect for scraping down the inside of the can when that seems to freeze too quickly and to easily get the good stuff out of the bottom of the can. I work at a wonderful museum (Hagley) and we made ice cream all day last Saturday and the spade was my personal friend. People loved home made peach!

I haven't seen any rust so far, but the varnish in the handle is chipping away. Not happy with that.

We bought one of these about fifteen years ago while visiting Lehmans. We absolutely loved it, and still use it. When my daughter got married, I ordered one for her kitchen. We were very disappointed when it arrived. It was not at all the quality that our original one was. I am not even sure if they still use it, but it was not worth the money at all. i would not buy another without seeing it first.

The first time I used it, it was put in the sink overnight. It was rusted the next morning. After one month of use, the handle sides are pulling away from the spade and the varnish on the handle is cracking and peeling off. Total piece of junk, made in China stamped right on it. Shame too, these used to be excellent quality years ago. Would not buy ever again!

I have owned this product less than 4 months and already the stainless steel is rusting and the finish is falling off the handles. It doesn't even feel sanitary. The only positive is the design.

This is the best functioning ice cream scoop to buy BUT beware!!! It says it is stainless steel. But I have had 2 from Lehmans that rust only after a few uses and the handles chip badly. I received a scoop like this 15 years ago and it has never rusted. I really wonder it is really stainless steel???

It started rusting the first time I used it. It's made in China. It works great but clean and dry it off right after using.

I am surprised to see the positive comments for this item. I ordered it and used it only twice when rust spots appeared on the blade and the coating on the handle started peeling off. I would not recommend this product. I contacted Lehman's and they were very cooperative and will process a full refund for the cost of the item. Not a great product, but excellent customer service.

first time using, put in water, took out 30 minutes later. had rust already. so much for stainless steel.

Thought it was made in the USA. Two of the rating feed backs said it was. Made in China......... I bought four for Christmas gifts. Checking back on info,it does say import. Please note. Thanks.

I have never found a better quality or functioning ice cream scoop! I've told friends and family that this is the only utensil to buy.

I got an ice cream spade that my grandma had owned. They were given out by a Ranchers Feed and Seed place here in my home town to thank all the farmers and ranchers for their business at Christmas. She got this back in the early 70's and I still use it and not just for ice cream. I use it for cakes, pies, casseroles, brownies it is great. My sister always threatens to steal it when she is back home. I finally found your site with them on it and ordered both my sisters one. Now mine is safe. The ice cream spade works so well that I bought a dozen of them. They make great hostess gifts. Everyone I have given one to comments on how easy it is to scoop even hard-frozen ice cream with one of these.

This is a great little ice cream server. I have one that is very similar that I have had for about 25 years. I bet this will be the only other one I will ever need and you can't beat it's price. I bought it when it was a monthly 1/2 price deal. AND ITS MADE IN THE USA!!!

This is the best tool to get ice cream out of. Even if the ice cream is frozen hard, this spade really digs it out easily. I wish I had ordered more than one and probably will.

I bought this for my Wife for Mother's Day. I remembered nothing with a cord. Although this doesn't give you a traditional scoop of ice cream, it works fantastic. No more waiting for the ice cream to soften. Easy on the hand and just plain works.

When Mom first brought an ice cream spade home 20 years ago it revolutionized our ice-cream dishing experience -- no more bent spoons or leaving the ice cream pail out to thaw for 20 minutes. Years later when I had my own kitchen and our family was putting together Christmas lists, I remembered how great the ice-cream spade was and put it on my list. My sister decided to buy one for me, and even told me so, but after she got it home she kept it for herself. The little stinker! I had to wait *another* year before I found one waiting under the Christmas tree for me! Anyway, this is simply the best way to scoop ice cream that ever existed, period. Buy one. No, buy five, because all your family and friends will be asking for one!

Best Ever!!! I have destroyed so many ice cream scooper over my life time its not even funny. back in 2005 I was staffed out in the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. and every time they did there ice cream bar they'd bring out these funny looking scoopers that went right through the ice cream, even if it was a block of ice you could easily chip off a-few chunks with out straining your self, these baby's can take it! I had almost lost hope of ever finding one until now. I Love these and see no reason to use anything else. they are tuff! ^_~

When I make sorbets, they freeze solid after a few days, even when I add some alcohol to the recipe. This tool is exactly what I needed to break up those tasty ice blocks into individual servings!

USA-made one is much better! I had this old ice cream spade, made in China, for less than a year; it cut through ice cream well, but the rivets on the handle were coming loose and you could tell it was going to break soon. I ordered the new USA-made one as soon as I saw it on the website, and when it arrived I immediately saw that the quality of materials and finish was far superior. It works like a charm, and no worries about food safety like with China items. It is well worth the few extra dollars to get a better product made in the USA!

I love this ice cream spade. The blade makes dipping very hard frozen ice cream a breeze. Even more so if you run the metal blade under hot water first. I reduced my rating of this product primarily due to the wooden handle which has not help up well from being place in the dishwasher. The handle will fare better if this item is hand-washed.

This is the best ice cream spade out there! I have bought several of these for family and they love them. Don't hesitate to purchase this item, it scoops hard as a rock ice cream with no problem.

Great idea/design! Sturdy and pretty well made, great for the hardest of ice cream; wash and dry well directly after each use, to prevent the blade from possible rust spots.

I purchased 3 of Lehmans ice cream spades for myself and family members and we all love them! It makes it so easy to dish up a bowl of ice cream.

Very sturdy little spade... i'd MUCH rather have this than an ice cream scoop. love it!
