'Star' splitting wedge
Sep 23, 2019

I bought this wedge three or four years ago, but never used it much as I had good wood that split easily with just the maul. This year however I got open-grown Spruce, and it was knotty all the way from top to bottom. I soon realized that I was going to be using a wedge a LOT! I also learned that a standard wedge is a real pain compared to this wedge that drives straight where you place it and opens up even the toughest round if you stay with it and drive it hard with an 8 pound sledge (as opposed to the backside of the maul). Whoever engineered this thing had it figured out for standard length rounds - up to about 25" - as the shape of the wedge will ultimately force open the tightest, knotty-est round. I was finally almost finished with my five cords of splitting when the tip broke off this wedge, about 1" up. That ended my use of it for initially opening up a piece, but if I used my other, standard wedge to get a crack started at least a half inch wide, then I could insert the broken wedge with the blunt point and finish splitting the piece. So I'll keep that one and just get another one that will hopefully hold up as well to my 'blunt force trauma'!

I purchased this looking for something to help me chop green wood this winter and so far so good! I am a small framed female who is completely new to chopping wood and this not only helps get through the bigger pieces but as I got used to hitting it with the sledge hammer end of the maul which then helped me get better with using the maul later on. I would recommend to a friend!

It is wonderful. I got this wedge about a year ago and is worth every cent. It never gets stuck in the wood. For me, it splits wood much faster than a regular wedge. Because of its design, aged logs can be split fairly easily. This wedge almost makes splitting wood enjoyable for a 70 year old.

I LOVE this wedge! I'm a 67 year old woman who heats with wood. Splitting oak was getting to be a real chore for me if I had to lift the log on the maul more than once or twice. The new wedge does not stick in the log, and splits cleanly through knots. The very pointed end starts the wedge into the wood easily.

This Wood Grenade works better than any wedge I've ever used. Its wide enough to still hit with a sledge when buried in a big round, I've never stuck it. The large diameter really opens up even knotty logs that normally stick a wedge. A good buy.
