Hatching position The position a chick should assume just prior to hatching to successfully escape from the shell. The chick should have its head under its right wing, with its beak positioned to break through the air cell at the large end of the egg.

northern fowl mite A dark red or black mite that is active in cool climates during winter and may be seen crawling on eggs in nests or on birds during the day, causing scabby skin and darkened feathers around the vent. Since these mites increase rapidly, act fast by dusting birds and nests with an approved insecticide. Northern fowl mites cannot live long in an unoccupied chicken house, which will be free of them after about three weeks. (Also called: feather mite)
