Memorial Day is a time set aside to remember those that have fought and lost their lives in the US military. This day holds a lot of meaning in a lot of people’s hearts. Remembering and honoring these soldiers is very important because they have given the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect us. If you’re a regular reader of the blogs posted here at Lehman’s, you might have seen my last two additions, Mexican and Korean dishes. I love both of those regions’ foods, and the recipes there are some of my absolute favorites.
This time, it’s a real crowd pleaser – Italian! When you think of Italian dishes, you probably think of delicious pastas with creamy sauces, crunchy bread with olive oils and garlic, a great selection of cheeses, and of course, the best pizza in the world. Maybe seafood, like shrimp, also comes to mind, or chicken crusted with Parmesan. Just about every ingredient associated with Italian food makes the mouths of most water. Since discovering my love for cooking a few years ago, I have also found that I love a certain kind of recipe the best – international recipes! Why should we stick to our same old menus when there is an entire world out there filled with different foods to try? Cooking dishes from another country is like traveling there and experiencing their culture, right at home. I like to make cooking international recipes even more of a cultural experience by listening to music from the region my recipe is from while I’m cooking, and learning more about the history of the recipe. Many people have fond childhood memories of advent calendars and candles marking the days in anticipation of Christmas time. A calendar of the month of December was proudly hung in many kitchens and family rooms to share the excitement of the coming celebration. Advent begins four weeks before the week of Christmas and includes two parts: candles and the calendar. Each Sunday of Advent, a candle on a wreath is lit to mark the nearing of the holiday. In some traditions, on Christmas, the final candle in the center is lit together as a family to celebrate the holiday’s arrival. Continue reading

Important household skills, and the amount of people concerned with learning them, have majorly declined over the past century. Skills such as cooking and baking from scratch, repairing things, growing food, sewing or knitting clothes, and creating goods like candles and soap don’t seem to be on the priority lists of many anymore.
It’s easy to see why – modern times have us distracted with other important things, and to give us more time to deal with these distractions, companies have made much quicker, easier, and more automated ways of getting things done. Continue reading
