These really can serve for generations. I inherited a #10 which my parents bought sometime in the 1950s and I still use it today (actually yesterday). They had only the 3/16 plate but I also bought other size plates at Lehman's. The #10 and #12 take the same plates and knives; the difference is a #10 clamps on while a #12 bolts down.

Love the way this is made! Got it last year and know itﾒll last many, many years. Would work great if weﾒd gotten the 3/16ﾔ blade it says is standard. Unfortunately we didnﾒt look at it immediately, so it was too late to ask questions by time we discovered this; and the additional/replacement blade is $60!
